Ford Torino Cobra
A large flat car with a snake on it and no intention of turning
Ford applied the Cobra name to its mid-size Torino, fitted the 428 Cobra Jet as standard, and sold the result to people who wanted the snake but also wanted a boot.

Sigil generated from the entry's own name. Every coil, hue and scale in this plate is a function of the string “ford-torino-cobra”, and of nothing else.
The muscle car era’s great insight was that a name could be moved. Shelby had spent the 1960s establishing that Cobra meant something specific and dangerous; Ford spent the end of the decade discovering that the meaning was portable.
The Torino Cobra came with the 428 Cobra Jet as standard equipment, a blackout bonnet, and a small coiled-snake decal that made no attempt to match the scale of the car it was on. It was two tons of American intermediate, and it went in a straight line with the calm authority of a landslide.
The Talladega variant, built to homologate a slippery nose for NASCAR superspeedways, is the closer relative of the Daytona Coupe than anyone at Ford would have admitted: another instance of a serpent being given a longer, lower snout purely so it could go faster in air.
The Ophidiary observes that this is the first car in the book where the snake is decoration on something that would have been fast anyway. That is not a criticism. Most religions reach this stage eventually.
The badge was small. The car was not. The road, briefly, was neither.
Questions people actually ask
What engine came in the Ford Torino Cobra?
The 428 Cobra Jet V8 was standard, with the Super Cobra Jet available when drag-oriented rear axle ratios were ordered. A 429 became available for 1971.
