Concept cars are the automotive industry’s form of prayer: a statement of what the company would like to be, made in a material that will never see rain.
The 2004 Shelby Cobra Concept was unusual in that it ran. It had an aluminium spaceframe, a genuine 6.4-litre V10 making something on the order of 605 horsepower, and proportions that quoted the 427 without embarrassing themselves by copying it. Carroll Shelby, then eighty-one, was present and appeared to enjoy himself enormously.
Then nothing happened. It was the wrong decade: Ford was about to spend several years discovering that it had no money, and a low-volume V10 roadster with no roof, no boot and no discernible business case was among the first things to be quietly walked back into the dark.
The Ophidiary does not consider this a failure. Snakes shed skins that are complete in every detail — eyelids, scales, the works — and simply leave them behind. The 2004 concept is a perfect shed skin. Everything is there except the animal.
It was alive for one week in January in a room in Detroit under lights that never go off and then it went back into the crate the way a snake goes back into the wall.

Did Ford ever build the 2004 Shelby Cobra Concept?
No. It remained a concept. Ford’s low-volume performance energy went instead into the GT and, later, into the Shelby GT500 Mustangs — which carry the snake badge but not the two-seat roadster architecture.
